Sometimes things pop up in your neighbourhood and you’re like, wait a minute, when did that open? And you wished that you’d known sooner because it’s a great place and you could have been revelling in its gloriousness right from the start. This just happened to me but I’m not going to dwell on all those great times I could have had. I’m just going to start having them.

Rouleur Espresso popped up in a side street in Abbotsford a couple of months ago. It’s fittingly out the back of new Johnson HQ on Victoria Street. It used to be a lamp shop but now it houses the kind of clever clogs people who can look after all your cycle needs from their fancy bicycle store and workshop.

The café side of things is like a little oasis of calm with great music, lots of wooden décor, books on cycling and cyclists to read and excellent coffee. It’s always interesting to see which of the many coffee roasters a café might choose. These guys have gone for Flying West Roasters from Noosa, Queensland and they are the only ones in Melbourne to be doing so. With a passionate team, Flying West have spent the last 20 years planning and executing excellent coffee experiences, sourcing and roasting coffee beans from all around the world.

Foodwise, Rouleur have gone for simple styles. You can have toast, granola or chia with fresh fruit, toasties or a cake or pastry from the counter.

You don’t have to wear lycra or have a bike to turn up here for coffee, but you will probably want to get a bike and do some cycling once you’ve been here. Which is fine because you can nick next door and get the whole package. I love it when it all comes together.
