ON THE SCENE | 9 ROUND KICKBOXING LAUNCH
by Charlotte Pordage
On Thursday July 7, the Northsider was invited to the launch of Melbourne’s first 9Round, a new 30 minute fitness program that fuses elements of boxing, kickboxing and martial arts with a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) style workout.
The workout consists of a challenging circuit divided into nine stations, where participants perform a variety of exercises targeting every muscle group, while safely building up their strength using professional boxing equipment.
HIIT, in which you do short bursts of all-out effort followed by short periods of active rest, has had the fitness industry buzzing for a while now because of its potential to burn maximum calories in minimum time. And 9Round will get your blood pumping, with gym junkies able to burn up to 500 calories in one half an hour session.
The program is designed to fit around your schedule, with a new circuit starting every three minutes. A trainer is included every step of the way to provide feedback on technique and keep motivation levels high, while exercises change daily to avoid boredom.
According to the brand’s Australian CEO, Dan Newton, 9Round is the ultimate solution for time poor Australian’s who are after real fitness results. “More and more Australian’s are finding it difficult to keep fit but the good news is, you don’t need to spend hours in the gym anymore. A new fitness phase is on the rise – people want a more personalised, convenient workout experience which compliments their busy lifestyle,” he said.
9Round is a product of Snap Fitness, the popular fitness franchise based on a 24/7 gym model. Snap Fitness was founded in 2003 in the United States and currently has more than 2,000 clubs worldwide, covering the USA, Canada, Mexico, India, Australia and New Zealand.
For now, Melbourne’s only 9Round club is located at 4/397 Smith Street, Fitzroy, but there are plans to open further clubs in Elsternwick and Brunswick over the coming months. The Fitzroy club officially opened yesterday (July 11) and currently offers morning (6am-10am) and evening (4pm-8pm) workout blocks, although these hours are likely to be extended as demand increases.
Membership costs $29.95 a week on a month by month basis or $26.90 on a 12 month plan. Both memberships include unlimited workouts, instruction from a certified 9Round trainer, gloves, hand wraps, nutrition guide and access to online nutritional support.
The 9Round Fitzroy franchise is owned by Paul Rayner and Glen Kercher, who have also been Snap Fitness franchisees, with backgrounds in retail and finance. The duo experienced the workout firsthand in February, when they flew to South Carolina for a training course. “We did four days of intensive training, two workouts a day for four days! Plus we had to help run the club and they had a classroom set up where we had to learn how it all worked and technique etc,” said Glen.
