CHATS WITH DREAMCOAT
By David Richardson
Super sentient musicians are forever flowering and inundating the air with their mellifluousness across the streets of Melbourne. Intrigued by this, I decided something needed to be done.
The tiny hairs in my ears were open mouthed and starving. They yearned to sample something new, something melodically rich, something that would violently vibrate them into climactic sonic delirium. So I rented a Winnebago, filled it with enough petrol to last the duration of the interview which follows (four minutes and twenty eight seconds or $750 worth of fuel) and drove around Reservoir with the one, the only, the King himself…Kieran Ebert.
Amidst a heated argument concerning the name of the female host from Who Dares Wins, Kieran took the time to enlighten me about his ‘brand new boy band’ Dreamcoat. All for the sake of attempting to satiate my Lilliputian ear hole hairs. After all, I knew this was the information they were so desperately seeking.
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Kieran Ebert and I play guitar.
How did Dreamcoat form and why the heck is it all so groovy?
Well, initially we were a trio. I was playing guitar and providing vocals, six-fingered Costa Hagi was slapping his six stringed bass, and Owen Luby was supplying the delectable drum grooves… which I truly think are the spine of the band. This was all well and good, but I just felt that something more was needed. That’s when Brayden McDonald came in and glued the band together with a second razor sharp and tree sap-weeping axe.
Tell me all about the song writing process?
Usually it all starts with me writing something on my guitar. It forms the framework for everything – words, melodies, etc. I then show the others and everyone adds their own input where necessary.
What are some of the happenings the band has undergone so far?
We just released a single titled Beautiful Kingdom. We were lucky enough to have a film clip made for it too, through our affiliation with Blank Tape Music.
At the moment we’re just rehearsing loads. We are readying ourselves for the pre-production stages that are coming up. So we’ll be doing this all through December, then hopefully record and release our debut EP sometime mid-January.
Who influences or inspires you the most in terms of the vast world of musicians out there?
I’d have to say Patsy Cline is a rock lobster solid genius. Not really. Ahh, I think seeing music around Melbourne is inspiring enough. Our sound has been compared to bands like Local Natives, Grizzly Bear and Radiohead. I have listened to these bands quite extensively, so maybe they have subconsciously penetrated my psyche in one way or another.
Describe your sound a little more for the inquisitive ears of the Northsider reader.
I guess it’s heavily rich in a harmonic sense. This most probably owes to our shared love of the Jazz. There are occasionally long instrumental parts, which encapsulate a post-rock kinda vibe… not to scare people away, as that whole ‘post rock’ term can be a bit off-putting or misinterpreted at times.
What’s next for Dreamcoat?
I’m not quite sure. I mean…you never really know your luck in the big city, right?
You can see Dreamcoat on 31 December at the Magic Truffle Farm in Serpentine (just outside of Bendigo). In the meantime, check out their smashing new single and music video via the links below.
